The Seasons

I am married to a Filipina. She is a mix of Spanish and Chinese, with a touch of Malayo.

My blood runs thick with the Celt so we’re an obvious match!

Even after close to 50 years together ‘La Rena’ and I continue to differ fundamentally on many issues . It’s not that there is disagreement necessarily on facts and other ‘undeniables’ - it’s the stuff above the foundations that causes most differences of view.

I got to thinking about ‘the stuff above’ as I was looking at a series of tree shots taken during that first year back in NZ from equatorial parts. Viewing the images in seasonal sequence I thought about whether my wife, G, appreciated them in the same way I did - her being tropical, n’all - and whether I could unsee these trees and see hers?

The symbolism of the seasonal metaphors of emergence/birth, flourishing/maturity, decline/ageing and dormancy/death might seem of little use to G. Maybe, wet/dry does her fine.

I’ll ask her.
